What is a Virtual Race?

Many of you may be asking yourselves what a virtual race actually is.  You see the advertisements on Facebook accompanied by excited comments from people who have taken part in one of these events, but no one really seems to explain the purpose.

Well, today’s your lucky day because I’m going to explain it to you!

A virtual race is a race that can be run* at any location.  You can run on a treadmill, in a park, on a trail of your choice, or even in another race!  That’s right!  You may have another race happening that same weekend and are unsure of how to do both – well guess what?  You can! You can run your race, and count those miles toward the virtual race.  Crazy right? Competing in two races in one day.  At the same time.  MADNESS.  But that’s what makes these races so fun!  They’re flexible!

Want to know what else makes virtual races so fun?

1. A sense of community.

We encourage our participants to post photos of their accomplishments and share their stories on our Facebook page after the event, which helps build up excitement and friendships!  Virtual races allow participants from all over to come together and run as one group.  It is common to see encouragement and support from other runners along the way! Here are some pictures from our previous race:

2. The Swag.

Let’s be real.  Who doesn’t love race gear?  Each virtual race offers a soft, comfortable, incredibly designed tee or tank, a race bib for your keeping, and a super awesome, limited edition medal – all of which turn a regular run into something more!  A medal with a built-in bottle opener should be enough to make anyone want to run a 10k!

3. Swaaaag.

Seriously though.

*Now how about pace?  What if you like running but a 10K is too advanced for you at the moment?  That’s fine!  You can run, walk, or even crawl the 6.2 miles!  A virtual race is done on your time, on your turf, and on your terms!

What’s the Point?

This sounds all well and good, but what’s the point?  Why should I spend a precious weekend running?

Well, besides the fact that these races are super fun, running a virtual race with GoneForARUN means that you will also be supporting an amazing charity!  A percentage of each race entry will be donated to a certain charity for that particular race.  What better reason do you need to run?

What Kind of Races Are Happening Now?

Glad you asked!  Right now we have the Run Now Beer Later Virtual 10K.  Run hard, then crack open a nice cold one (with the use of your hard earned medal/bottle opener)!  By running this race you will also be supporting an amazing charity.  A percentage of your race entry will be donated to The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.  This fund is a leader in supporting men and women of the Armed Forces and their families.  Registration for this race ends September 15th, and the race will be held September 25-27.

Our next race is the Faster Than Boo Virtual 10K!  Try to outrun Boo, our friendly ghost mascot, in this spooktacular 10K!  A percentage of these race entries will be donated to The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.  This foundation has enriched the lives of over 600 children and their families battling with pediatric cancer.  Registration for this race ends on October 19th, and the race will be held October 29-31.

GoneForARUN is proud to provide runners both a great virtual running event that promotes fun and wellness as well as giving back to a very worthy cause to help others in need!
