This year Boston Marathon runners ran on behalf of more than 200 non-profit organizations and raised an astonishing $28.3 million for charity.

The overall total breakdown:

  • $15.6 million was raised through the Boston Athletic Association’s (B.A.A) Official Charity Program. The B.A.A was established in 1887 with the mission of promoting a healthy life style through sports, especially running. The B.A.A’s Boston Marathon is a part of of the Abbott World Marathon Majors and is the world’s oldest annual marathon
  • $10.6 million was raised through John Hancock’s Marathon Non-Profit Program.  John Hancock Financial is a division of Manulife, a leading Canada-based financial services group, and has been a principle sponsor of the Boston Marathon since 1986.
  • $2.1 million raised by qualified and other invitational runners.
